BIOLOGY CUFFLINKS - LILY LEAF LOWER EPIDERMIS, TOLUIDINE BLUE STAINED, PLM (CL8)

The lower layer of cells (the epidermis) was stripped from a lily leaf (with a steady hand!) and stained with Toluidine Blue. By viewing the stained epidermis using a polarised light microscope, the different cells present can be seen, including the guard cells which surround the stomata (mouth like structures which allow gaseous diffusion across the normally impermeable epidermis). The guard cells stain a slightly different colour due to the difference in the chemical structure of the cell walls.

This means that as you move the cufflinks the image has real depth and almost appears 'alive'.
